ST. GEORGE, UTAH – On Monday, April 30th, 2018, two vehicles were involved in a crash on state Route 18 located in St. George, Utah. It was reported that two individuals involved in the crash were transported to the hospital for medical care. The crash occurred just prior to 5:00 p.m. The preliminary investigation indicated that both vehicles, a red Chevy Cruz and a white VW Beetle (bug) were headed northbound on SR-18. The Chevy veered off the road to the right. The VW Bug was traveling a little ways behind the Chevy and as it passed the Chevy the Chevy attempted to make a u-turn, turning directly in front of the WV. The Chevy and the WV Bug impacted. Both vehicles had to be towed away from the scene of the crash. As of the time of the report, no citations had been issued. Medical emergency responders from Gold Cross Ambulance brought both drivers to the hospital to receive medical care for their injuries sustained in the crash.
According to the 2016 Utah Crash Summary posted on highwaysafety.utah.gov, there were 34,596 crashes that took place because someone failed to yield (this includes improper u-turns). That amounts to 21.8% of all crashes that occurred on our roads. Everyone needs to be careful when making a u-turn. At Injury Defenders we see these kinds of cases constantly. Although the police had not issued citations as of the time of this report, typically speaking the driver of the Chevy will be held responsible for failing to yield and failing to keep a proper lookout. The driver as well as any passengers that were in the VW bug will have a claim to make against the insurance company that insured the driver of the Chevy.
